All across the United States this past week protesting and rioting has taken place in support of the Black Lives Matter Movement and in response to many recent acts of police brutality and killings of African Americans in America. The country has come to a complete halt focusing on the issue at hand, with recent tear-gassing and extreme chaos at many rallies and riots it can be hard to figure out what you can do to make a difference especially when you are at home. Below are just a few ways you can contribute to the Black Lives Matter movement from home as you hope to see the change hopefully to come in our country.
Sign petitions - Help bring legal action to those involved in recent killings at change.org by signing petitions for people like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and more. Under the racial justice topic category you can find hundreds of petitions waiting for your signature in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Inform yourself - Take some time and delve deep into the history of African American discrimination that has been present for centuries, read books on slavery and police brutality in America, watch documentaries on the brutal killings of African Americans from all walks of life. Find the real facts and use that information to inform others, bring harsh realities into the lives of those living in ignorant bliss.
Support black-owned businesses - It is easy to look up both local and international black-owned businesses. Supporting those that are being impacted during this time is extremely important and easy to do. Instead of shopping on Amazon opt for a black-owned business. Many brands like AAKS and Riot Swim are looking for your support.
Buy from companies donating proceeds - Many small businesses like Etsy shops are donating their proceeds to Black Live Matter movement organizations and they need your help. Finding companies that are actively donating is a great way to make a difference along with donating yourself.
Register to vote- One of the most important things you can do during this time is register to vote. Getting the right state officials and presidential candidates in office is a huge step in the right direction. Take time to research local and national candidates and their beliefs and actions regarding the Black Lives Matter movement and their views on the structure of our systems.
