Interview with Tasha, owner of Phoenix Rayne

Conducted by: Madison Duboise

• Please tell me your full name, your official business name, where you are located and about your education.

My name is Tasha, owner of Phoenix Rayne. I currently reside in Santa Clarita, California. I have always had a love for fashion and design, I actually went to school for Fashion Merchandising, Marketing and Management.

• Where did your idea to start a business come from?

Phoenix Rayne is literally my babies. The name comes from my two beautiful children, Jayden Phoenix and Phynix Rayne. I always had a love for fashion so when I started having children that love quickly turned into a love for children's fashion. I knew that I wanted to own my own shop inspired by my littles ones.

• Tell me about the start-up of your business. How did you feel once you finally opened up?

The idea of Phoenix Rayne came about in 2018 when I found out we were pregnant with Miss Phynix. I always knew that I wanted to own my own shop inspired by my kiddos. I also knew for sure that I didn't want to go back to my 9 to 5. I wanted to be able to stay home, spend more time with my little ones and work for myself.

Having a background in music and entertainment, I was also missing my creative outlet. Like most new moms, once I started having kids all my time and energy shifted to my children. I had been teetering with the idea for a while but never could bring myself to make the first move. The opportunity presented itself and I finally decided to take a leap of faith and open my own shop.

Opening up my own shop has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding things I have ever done besides child birth and motherhood.

• Who helped you start your business, what type of support did you receive from friends and family?

All of my family and friends have been very supportive. They have helped in many ways including financially.

I have had the support of my loving husband and every step of the way. He is very creative so he helps with design ideas.

Jayden and Phynix are all in the family business. They are not only the face of the brand, they are my fit models, my packaging assistants, etc.

Jayden my 5 year old helps with all product development. He tells me what he likes and why. He helps with the designs, choosing fabrics and colors. And he sure isn't shy when it comes to voicing his opinion. My mom has also been a major part of my shop. She jumps I and helps out whenever I need her. She's been my courier(I'm sure the post office knows her by name now ) she's been my kid wrangler and has assisted me on all photo shoots, she even counts and updates inventory.

• What products do you specialize in selling? Tell me about some of your favorites.

We specialize in Children's headwear and accessories. We create modern accessories for the stylish babes. We carry everything from fedoras, beanies, turbans, hair bows. Some of my favorite products are in the new Sunset Collection. All inspired by my favorite time of the day and if it's near a beach, even better!

In this collection, we have the cutest straw hats, bucket hats, and some of the most stylish retro sunglasses.

• Why is selling these items important to you?

I love being able to create the perfect accessories to complement your little ones outfits, and at the same time express their personalities and individuality.

• Tell me the process of creating and selling your products.

The design and buying process is my favorite. It allows me to create and choose things I really love and love to see my kids wear. It is so awesome to have control over the different components that go into it. The most rewarding feeling is to see all these cute kids wearing your designs, your products something that you love and to see that people love them just as much as you do, it is so fulfilling.

• What do you do on a normal day for your business, walk me through that.

A typical day usually consist of answering emails, social media post, jotting down a million little notes throughout the day(so I don't forget things, mom brain in real! Lol) for product designs, photo shoots, people I want to contact or reach out too or just any ideas that come to mind regarding the brand. A big part of my day, also includes packaging orders and trips to the post office. All while being a stay at home mom to two of the cutest, little demanding humans on the planet lol

• What do you enjoy about running your business, what things can be hard at times?

My business gives me the creative outlet that I need. It is so important to me to have a creative outlet solely for the joy of it. And that is exactly what this shop is for me.

I also love that I am able to involve my own kids. They are my muses. I enjoy being able to include them in every way.

• What growth do you hope to see from your business in the future?

My hope for Phoenix Rayne in the future is to continue to gain momentum, increase our customer base and expand our product line. I would like to venture into a children's shoes and clothing in the near future.

In all honesty, I am not looking to get rich here or take over the small shop industry. I am just a mom who wants to raise her children and help support her family with a business that she loves.
